Monika

Monika is a form of Monica used in German, Polish, and several other European languages. The original name has an uncertain origin, possibly connected with North Africa. Later associations with Latin moneo, meaning to advise, and Greek monos, meaning single, are familiar explanations but are not secure proof of its derivation.

Saint Monica, the mother of Augustine of Hippo, gives the name family a longstanding Christian connection. Monika preserves that history with a k spelling that is ordinary in many languages, rather than merely a modern alteration of English Monica. The choice can therefore reflect a family’s established language form. Its cultural and historical identity remains substantial even without assigning it a definite meaning such as advisor or one.
