Monte

Monte has more than one naming route. It can be a short form associated with Montgomery, or it can connect with the Italian and Spanish word monte, meaning a mountain or upland area. Those explanations should be kept separate; the everyday mountain word does not explain every Montgomery-family nickname.

Monty is a closely related nickname spelling. The final e in Monte may lead speakers to expect different sounds depending on whether they recognize an English nickname or an Italian or Spanish word. Stating the family's pronunciation is therefore particularly useful. Monte has historical use as a full given name as well as a familiar short form, and its landscape connection can be meaningful without assigning one origin to every bearer.
