Nick

Nick is most often a familiar form of Nicholas, whose Greek roots give the meaning “victory of the people.” It can also come from other longer names, including Dominick. That second route has a different derivation, so the meaning of a particular Nick depends on which full name, if any, the family intends.

The ck spelling makes the one-syllable sound clear in English, while Nik is a shorter written alternative. Nick can be an official given name or an informal everyday form. A family honoring a Nicholas may prefer the concise version, whereas keeping Nicholas allows both formal and familiar uses. The choice does not require inventing a separate meaning for the nickname itself.
