Niles

Niles comes from an English surname derived from the personal name Neil. Neil ultimately belongs to the Irish Niall family, whose older meaning is uncertain despite several familiar proposed translations. The surname connection is the secure part of Niles’s history, making it an example of a family name returning to use as a first name.

A recognizable fictional bearer is Niles Crane from Frasier, whose television presence gives the name a modern cultural association. That character is one layer rather than the origin of the name. Niles has a compact, one-syllable form in usual English pronunciation, with the final s distinguishing it from Neil. For parents interested in preserving a Niles surname or honoring a Neil indirectly, that historical relationship provides a more useful story than an uncertain ancient gloss.
