Nirvana

Nirvana is a Sanskrit term with a central place in Indian religious thought, particularly Buddhism. Often explained through the image of extinguishing, it refers in Buddhist teaching to liberation from the forces that sustain suffering, rather than simply to a beautiful place. The related Pali form is nibbana, used in Theravada Buddhist texts and teaching.

English also uses nirvana loosely for perfect happiness, and music listeners may associate it with the band of that name. Those later associations are separate from the religious concept. A family choosing Nirvana has a name with substantial philosophical weight, so understanding the tradition behind it adds more value than treating it as another word for heaven. Its meaning is a state or realization, not a geographical destination.
