Oakleigh

Oakleigh is a spelling in the Oakley family, connected with English place names describing an oak clearing. The oak element refers to the tree, while the older leah element concerns a clearing or woodland opening. The modern leigh spelling preserves that familiar place-name ending; it does not add a second meaning such as strength or beauty.

Oakley and Oaklee are useful comparisons because they share the same basic name and sound while giving it different written forms. Oakleigh makes the final element especially visible. Its botanical connection is literal, unlike the personality qualities sometimes associated with oak trees. The name works as a landscape-inspired choice without needing to refer to one particular oak, village, or family surname.
