Octavius

Octavius belongs to the Roman name family built around octavus, the Latin word for eighth. It became a hereditary family name, so a later person called Octavius did not necessarily occupy the eighth place among siblings. That distinction matters when interpreting Roman number names as choices for modern children.

The future emperor Augustus was born Gaius Octavius, making this one of the most historically recognizable Roman name families. Shakespeare also uses Octavius Caesar in Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. Related forms such as Spanish Octavio and Italian Ottavio adapt the same root to other languages. Octavius preserves the longer Latin shape, giving parents a direct connection with classical history while leaving them free to choose it regardless of birth order.
