Omari

Omari is used in Swahili naming as a form of the Arabic name Umar, also written Omar. The underlying Arabic root concerns life or living and is commonly explained through ideas of flourishing or longevity. “Populous” is too narrow a word to explain the personal name clearly, especially without its linguistic background.

Actor Omari Hardwick is a recognizable bearer in American popular culture. His name illustrates contemporary use outside East Africa without changing the Swahili and Arabic connection. Omari's final i distinguishes it from Omar on paper and in speech. Amari may look similar, but its several possible origins should be considered separately instead of being automatically folded into the Umar family.
