Onyx

Onyx is a gemstone name used directly as a given name. The word comes through Greek, where it is associated with a nail or claw, but the modern naming connection is usually the stone. Onyx can contain contrasting bands; it is not simply a name for any black rock.

The final x gives the short spelling two consonant sounds at the end in English. Families may choose it for the gemstone, a color association, or the sound. Pearl and Jasper are other stone names to compare by theme, though they have separate word histories. Onyx itself requires no longer formal expansion.
