Osiris

Osiris is the Greek form of the name of an ancient Egyptian god associated with the dead, fertility, and renewal. The Egyptian name’s original meaning is uncertain. Interpretations involving strength or an eye have been proposed, but “strong eyesight” should not be presented as an established translation of the complete name.

In Egyptian mythology, Osiris is closely connected with Isis and Horus and serves as a ruler and judge in the afterlife. Those stories give the name a substantial mythological identity. Os or Oz offers a short everyday possibility, while the full form has a distinctive three-syllable rhythm. Parents interested in ancient Egypt may find the documented mythology more meaningful than a simplified modern gloss.
