Osmar

Osmar has a documented connection with the Old English name Osmær, formed from elements meaning god and famous. The spelling Osmar itself appears among the forms recorded in Domesday Book, giving it a firmer historical foundation than its modern appearance might suggest. Divine fame is a concise way of expressing those older elements.

The name is also used in Brazil, where a particular family's reasons for choosing it may be more recent. That usage does not erase the older European name, nor does it require assuming that every Osmar was created by combining two other names. For parents interested in names with a less familiar medieval history, Osmar offers a short, usable form backed by actual early records. Osmer is another historical spelling worth comparing.
