Oswin

Oswin comes from an Old English name combining os, meaning a god, with wine, meaning friend. The name is commonly interpreted as friend of a god or divine friend. Its older spelling Oswine makes the second element especially visible and connects it with other early English names built around friendship.

A seventh-century ruler of Deira, remembered as Saint Oswin, gives the name a historical and religious association. Its linguistic roots are older than that saint’s story, so the meaning should not be reduced to a single Christian interpretation. Oswin shares the opening element with names such as Oswald, while Edwin shares the friendship ending. Those relationships give it a useful place among traditional English names with a compact form and a distinct history.
