Price

Price is a Welsh surname formed from ap Rhys, meaning son of Rhys. As the sounds of the two words came together, they produced the familiar surname. Rhys is associated with ardor or enthusiasm, so Price carries a family relationship at its core rather than the meaning of the ordinary English word for a cost.

Using Price as a first name can preserve a maternal surname, honor a relative, or express a connection with Welsh heritage. The spelling is short and familiar to English readers, although its surname history may be less obvious than its everyday word association. That contrast can become part of the name's story. For parents choosing it, son of Rhys is the direct explanation, while enthusiasm belongs to the older personal name within it.
