Rafe

Rafe is an English form of Ralph that makes one traditional pronunciation visible in the spelling. Ralph belongs to a Germanic and Old Norse name family combining counsel with a wolf, commonly summarized as “wolf counsel.” Rafe can also be used informally for other names, but those nickname choices should not replace its established connection with Ralph.

For English readers, the spelling often makes the intended sound clearer than Ralph does. Its single syllable gives it a concise shape beside names such as Hugh or Jude, while the final f adds a distinctive finish. Families honoring a Ralph may like the direct relationship without using the same written form. Rafe stands comfortably alone and does not need a longer official name to be complete.
