Randy

Randy is commonly a short form of Randall or Randolph, names connected with an older Germanic shield-and-wolf compound. It can also arise from other longer names in family use, so a single Latin meaning such as “admirable” does not explain every Randy. The nickname itself is also used as a complete official name.

The same spelling is an informal adjective in British English with a sexual meaning, an association worth recognizing when a family uses the name across countries. That everyday word is separate from the personal name's history. Parents honoring a Randall or Randolph can preserve the familiar nickname while deciding whether they prefer Randy or the longer form on formal documents.
