Ren

Ren is a Japanese name that can be written with characters meaning “lotus” or “romantic love,” among other possibilities. The chosen writing matters: these are alternative meanings, not a combined definition. Ren also appears independently as a short form of names such as René or Renata, whose Latin ancestry gives them the meaning “reborn.”

Its single syllable and three letters make Ren particularly compact, but the name can carry a substantial cultural story. The lotus reading offers a direct botanical connection. English speakers may hear the bird name Wren, which has a separate origin despite sounding alike. Deciding which tradition matters to your family helps distinguish Ren’s meaning from its many sound-alike associations.
