Rian

Rian is an Irish personal name connected with the surname Ó Riain, from which English Ryan developed. It is traditionally interpreted as “little king,” linking it with Irish rí, “king,” but the full name’s ancient origin is not certain. That familiar translation is useful as a traditional explanation rather than an unquestionable literal fact.

Rian can also be used as a spelling of Ryan in English, so its pronunciation is not uniform across families. Irish usage commonly has a different first vowel from the familiar English Ryan. Rían is another written form. Keeping the original personal-name history in view distinguishes Rian from a purely recent respelling chosen only for its appearance.
