Ridley

Ridley is an English surname drawn from several place names. For places in Cheshire, Kent, and Northumberland, the older elements are usually explained as cleared land and a woodland clearing. Other places with the same modern spelling may have a different first element, so one precise landscape translation does not cover every family.

Director Ridley Scott offers an established example of Ridley used as a first name, while actor Daisy Ridley makes the surname familiar in a different way. The name has also appeared in fiction, adding to its range of associations. For parents interested in a surname style, Ridley supplies a genuine English place-name background and a simple two-syllable rhythm without needing an elaborate invented meaning.
