Rio

Rio can be chosen from Spanish río or Portuguese rio, both meaning river. It can also represent a Japanese name whose meaning depends on the characters used. These are separate linguistic routes, so a specific cherry-blossom interpretation should not be attached to every person with this spelling.

Rio de Janeiro and the Rio Grande give the name recognizable geographical associations. The short form is used for boys and girls, with no longer formal version required. For parents choosing it through Japanese heritage, the original writing supplies essential context. For those choosing the river word, the landscape meaning is already direct and easy to explain.
