Ripley

Ripley comes from English place names that became surnames. The ending reflects the old word for a clearing or woodland, while explanations of the first element can depend on the particular place. That geographical background gives the name a more precise history than assuming it comes from the ordinary modern verb “rip.”

Ellen Ripley in the Alien films and Tom Ripley in Patricia Highsmith’s novels provide two very different fictional associations, both originally surnames. Ripley is also used as a first name for boys and girls. Rip offers a short form, but the full two-syllable name is already compact. Families can consider which fictional or ancestral connection is most immediate to them.
