Roger

Roger comes through French from a Germanic name combining fame and spear. “Famous warrior” is a broader interpretation, while the spear element is more precise. The name became established in England after the Norman Conquest and has a long history independent of the modern radio acknowledgment “roger.”

Tennis player Roger Federer and actor Roger Moore provide familiar modern associations. In literature, Roger Chillingworth is a central character in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, adding a very different reference to the name's history. Roger's two-syllable form generally needs no nickname, though Rog is possible. Parents may value its historical continuity or use it as a direct tribute to a relative.
