Ronnie

Ronnie is an affectionate form of Ronald and is also used independently. Through Ronald, it reaches back to an Old Norse name combining ideas of counsel and rulership. Ronnie can also shorten Veronica or other names, especially for girls, so the meaning depends on the longer form a family intends rather than on the nickname alone.

Singer Ronnie Spector provides a familiar example of the feminine use, while many boys have borne Ronnie as a full name or nickname. Ronny is a related spelling. The relaxed ending gives Ronnie a friendly everyday sound, and Ron offers an even shorter option. Parents can decide whether to retain a formal long name or use the familiar short form throughout.
