Rooney

Rooney is an English form of an Irish surname, commonly traced to Ó Ruanaidh. The surname means descendant of Ruanaidh, with the older personal name associated with a strong man or champion. Its original structure therefore described a family relationship, and the shorter translation descendant of the champion keeps both parts of that story visible.

The name has moved beyond surname use, with actress Rooney Mara providing a familiar example of it as a public given name. Other people may first recognize it through the surname of an actor or athlete. For a child, Rooney can preserve an Irish family connection while joining the wider tradition of surnames used as first names.
