Roque

Roque is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the name known in Italian as Rocco and in French as Roch. Its older Germanic origin is uncertain. One explanation connects it with a word for crow or rook, but familiar glosses such as rock should not be treated as a settled meaning of the personal name.

Saint Roch gives the name an important Christian association. Traditionally remembered for caring for people affected by plague, he is known as San Roque in Spanish and São Roque in Portuguese. That saint’s name also appears in churches and place names, giving the first name a wider cultural setting. Roque’s concise spelling keeps that Iberian form distinct from Rocco, even though both belong to the same historical name family.
