Rocco

Rocco is an Italian name associated with Saint Rocco, also known as Saint Roch. Its earlier linguistic roots are uncertain. Explanations involving rest, a crow, or a roar have been proposed, but these alternatives should not be combined into one confident meaning. The Italian naming tradition and the saintly association are more secure than any single ancient translation.

Rocky is a possible informal nickname, although the English word “rock” does not explain Rocco’s origin. Chef Rocco DiSpirito offers a recognizable modern namesake. The doubled “c” is part of the Italian spelling, and families using Italian pronunciation may give it more emphasis than English speakers typically do.
