Rosaline

Rosaline is a medieval form of Rosalind, a name with Germanic elements associated with horse and gentleness or softness. Its later resemblance to Latin and Romance words for rose helped create a strong floral association. That rose connection is part of the name’s cultural history, even though it is not the oldest derivation.

Shakespeare used Rosaline in both Love’s Labour’s Lost and Romeo and Juliet. In the latter, she is Romeo’s earlier love before he meets Juliet, while the other play gives the name to a character with a more active role. English pronunciations vary, especially in the final syllable. Rosaline therefore offers an established literary name whose history is richer than a straightforward extension of Rose.
