Rosalind

Rosalind originally combines Germanic elements for a horse and something soft or tender. Its resemblance to rose names later influenced how it was understood, but the flower association is not the starting point of its older derivation. That distinction explains why dictionaries can give an unexpected meaning beside a name that looks so clearly floral.

Literature is central to Rosalind’s English history. Edmund Spenser used it in poetry, and Shakespeare gave it to the resourceful heroine of As You Like It. Actor Rosalind Russell supplies a later cultural association. Ros and Roz are familiar short forms, while Rosalinda and Rosalinde show how the name developed in other European language traditions.
