Royce

Royce is a given name taken from an English surname. One established explanation traces that surname to the medieval personal name Royse, a form of Rose. The resemblance to Roy has also encouraged royal-sounding interpretations, but “son of the king” should not be treated as a settled translation. The surname connection is a more useful starting point.

Royce is a single syllable with a firm final sound, making it noticeably different from softer Roy or longer Roland. The Rolls-Royce association may be familiar to some listeners, though it is only one part of the name’s cultural context. Families honoring an ancestor can preserve Royce exactly rather than assume Roy is its original full form.
