Rubi

Rubi is associated with the ruby gemstone, and Spanish normally writes the word and name Rubí with an accent. Portuguese also uses rubi for the stone. This gives the name a clear mineral connection without needing to turn ideas about a ruby's symbolism into additional literal meanings.

Rubi is also encountered in Japanese naming, where its meaning depends on the chosen characters. A particular combination may refer to another gemstone, but that does not change the Spanish or Portuguese word's definition. Ruby is the familiar English comparison. Families choosing Rubi can preserve the spelling of their language or surname tradition while deciding separately whether an accent is part of the written name.
