Ruslan

Ruslan is a name used in Slavic languages whose story reaches back to the Turkic word arslan, meaning lion. It developed through forms such as Yeruslan or Uruslan, connecting the modern name with a wider group of lion names. Its resemblance to Russia is a coincidence rather than the explanation of its meaning.

Alexander Pushkin made Ruslan the hero of his narrative poem Ruslan and Ludmila, drawing on an existing world of folk tales. That literary connection is central to the name's Russian cultural history. It also shows how a name can be fully established in one language while preserving a root borrowed from another. Arslan is a more direct relative of the original lion word, while Ruslan carries the distinct literary and linguistic history of its later form.
