Sandro

Sandro began as a shortened form of Alessandro, the Italian form of Alexander. Its meaning comes through the Greek elements behind Alexander, usually understood as defender of the people. By taking the latter part of the longer name, Sandro has a different sound from Alex while retaining the same historical family.

The Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli gives the name an especially strong artistic association. His works include The Birth of Venus, linking this familiar form with one of the best-known periods of Italian art. Sandro can be used alongside Alessandro or chosen as a complete given name, carrying that cultural connection without needing the longer form in everyday life.
