Sara

Sara is a form of Sarah, the Hebrew name traditionally translated as “princess.” Its biblical connection is with Sarah, the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac. Removing the final h changes the spelling without giving Sara a new meaning or separating it from that name family.

The sound is less consistent across languages than the spelling suggests. Some families pronounce Sara and Sarah alike, while others use a more open first vowel in Sara. It is worth saying the name aloud with the surname before settling on a pronunciation. Sara is a complete name in its own right, and its short written form does not require a nickname or a longer formal version.
