Scotty

Scotty developed as a familiar form of Scott, a surname originally identifying a person from Scotland. Its meaning comes through that older descriptive family name. The y ending makes it an affectionate short form, but it does not add another element to the original geographical meaning.

Star Trek's engineer Montgomery Scott, known as Scotty, is a well-known fictional example of the nickname being used from a surname. Scotty also appears as a full given name. Scottie is the closest alternative spelling, while Scott leaves room to use either familiar form informally. A family honoring a Scott can choose how closely the official name should follow the original.
