Sequoia

Sequoia is a tree name used as a given name, bringing to mind the immense redwoods associated with California. The botanical name is commonly understood as honoring Sequoyah, the Cherokee scholar who created a syllabary for the Cherokee language, although the naming history has been discussed and debated. That possible dedication is distinct from the tree word’s modern use in English.

For a child’s name, the direct natural image is the clearest starting point: a tree known for extraordinary size and longevity. Families may also value learning about Sequoyah and the linguistic achievement associated with his name. Sequoia preserves the botanical spelling, while Sequoyah is a separate personal-name form with its own specific historical identity.
