Sheldon

Sheldon comes from an English surname taken from places with that name. Its meaning varies with the location: several are connected with an Old English word for a ledge or shelf, followed by an element describing a hill or valley. That geographical history makes a broad landscape explanation more accurate than assigning one translation to every Sheldon family.

As a first name, Sheldon has a familiar surname rhythm and the informal option Shel. Some readers will also recognize Sheldon Cooper, the fictional physicist in The Big Bang Theory, although the name's history is much older than the television character. For a family using Sheldon as an inherited surname, identifying the particular place in its ancestry can add a more personal layer to the name's meaning.
