Shiv

Shiv is a form of Shiva used in Hindi and other northern Indian language settings. The Sanskrit name is associated with auspiciousness and graciousness, and it is the name of one of the principal deities of Hindu tradition. Shiva’s religious significance includes transformation and renewal, extending well beyond a single-word description such as destroyer.

The shorter written form reflects how a final vowel may be treated in modern Indian languages, rather than necessarily being an invented nickname. Shiv therefore preserves a direct connection with the deity and with a living naming tradition. It can also occur as a personal shortening of other names, but that individual use is distinct from the established Indian form and its Sanskrit background.
