Skye

Skye refers most directly to the Scottish island of that name. Its older place-name meaning is uncertain, and it does not reliably translate as scholar. The spelling also sounds like the English word sky, giving modern families an additional natural association that is separate from the island’s linguistic history.

Sky keeps the ordinary English word, while Skye preserves the familiar geographical spelling. Both are short on the page and usually share a single-syllable sound in English. A family connection to the island can make the final e especially meaningful. Otherwise, parents can choose between the place-name emphasis and the more direct image of the sky above.
