Sofie

Sofie is an established European form of Sophia, from the Greek word for wisdom. It appears in several language traditions, including German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, and Czech. Replacing ph with f reflects spelling conventions rather than a separate meaning or a recent attempt to invent a new name.

The same written form can be pronounced differently across those languages. English speakers often read two syllables, while some Scandinavian and Czech forms preserve a more audible final vowel. Sophie and Sophia are useful comparisons within the same family, but their endings should not be assumed to sound identical everywhere. Sofie combines a clear Greek meaning with the later history of names moving between European languages.
