Sonya

Sonya is a familiar form of the Russian Sofya, part of the international Sophia name family. The original Greek word sophia means wisdom. Sonya developed its own recognizable identity while retaining that connection, and it can be used either as a familiar form or as a complete given name.

Russian literature gives the name particular depth through characters such as Sonya in Crime and Punishment and Sonya in War and Peace. English translations may choose different spellings, reflecting the movement from Cyrillic to Latin letters. Sonia and Sonja are closely related forms used in other language settings. Sonya offers the concise Russian form of a name family whose meaning remains unusually direct across its many adaptations.
