Stratton

Stratton is an English place surname built from older words for a paved road and a settlement or enclosure. The road element often points to an important ancient route, sometimes a Roman road. Several places share the name, so the surname does not identify one single family or one universal ancestral village.

As a first name, Stratton carries the structure of a place name into family naming. Its ending belongs to the same broad English settlement vocabulary found in many surnames, while the opening element supplies the road connection. A particular family may choose it to preserve an ancestral surname or honor a place. That personal link is more specific than treating the name as a general promise of travel or adventure, which its historical meaning does not require.
