Suede

Suede is an English word name taken from the soft, napped leather used in clothing and accessories. The word entered English through French, from an expression referring to gloves from Sweden. Its historical connection is therefore geographical, while the immediate modern meaning is the material rather than the nationality adjective “Swedish.”

As a personal name, Suede belongs to the same broad vocabulary approach as other fabric or material names. Its usual English pronunciation differs from simply reading the French country name Suède aloud. The spelling also resembles names such as Wade or Sage in sound, but those are unrelated origins. The material’s texture can be an association without becoming a claim about the bearer’s personality.
