Sunni

Sunni can be used as a spelling of Sunny, bringing the English word’s association with sunshine into a given name. It also occurs as a short form of Sunniva, a Scandinavian name whose older roots express a gift connected with the sun. These are related in imagery but represent different routes to the same brief spelling.

The form Sunni is also familiar as the name of a major branch of Islam, a separate word with its own history. That visible association does not establish the meaning or religious identity of every person named Sunni. A family may intend the English sunny word, a connection with a Sunniva, or an inherited family spelling; knowing that intended path gives the name its most useful personal context.
