Swayze

Swayze began as a family name, with Swasey among its historically related spellings. Early American records connect the two forms through a family that arrived from England and later settled in Massachusetts and Long Island. The deeper surname origin is less certain: a connection with a German word for a Swiss person has been proposed, alongside other explanations.

Actor and dancer Patrick Swayze gives the spelling a particularly recognizable modern association through films such as Dirty Dancing and Ghost. That cultural connection may matter more to a family choosing it today than the unresolved older derivation. As a first name, Swayze carries both a surname history and a film association, without having one securely established literal translation.
