Teddy

Teddy is a familiar short form of both Theodore and Edward, which have different origins. Theodore carries the Greek meaning “gift of God,” while Edward combines Old English elements associated with wealth and protection. Teddy also serves as a full given name, so neither longer form is compulsory when parents choose it.

The teddy bear association comes through President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname helped give the toy its name. That cultural connection does not make “bear” Teddy's literal etymology. Ted offers an even shorter everyday option, and Teddie is a nearby spelling. Families honoring an Edward or Theodore can keep that particular connection clear while enjoying the same affectionate short form.
