Tegan

Tegan is a Welsh name associated with teg, meaning fair or beautiful. The same language also uses tegan as an ordinary word for a toy, but that modern dictionary sense does not tell the whole story of the personal name. Tegan should also be distinguished from Irish Teagan, whose surname history provides a separate possible route.

Musician Tegan Quin, one half of Tegan and Sara, gives the spelling a familiar modern association. Doctor Who supplied another recognizable example through the character Tegan Jovanka. English-speaking families often use a long opening vowel, while Welsh pronunciation can sound different. Choosing the spelling Tegan can therefore involve both a Welsh connection and a preferred family pronunciation; neither needs to erase the other or turn every similar name into the same origin.
