Therese

Therese belongs to the Teresa and Theresa name family, whose earliest origin is uncertain. Connections with a Greek word for harvesting and with Greek place names have both been proposed. Harvest is therefore a traditional possibility rather than a translation that can be stated without qualification.

The French spelling Thérèse is especially associated with Thérèse of Lisieux, remembered for her approach to faith through small everyday acts. German and Scandinavian use often writes Therese without the accents, and pronunciation varies by language. Tess and Tessie provide familiar shorter forms in English. For a family choosing Therese, its long religious and international history may matter more than resolving the oldest etymology. The name offers a connection to particular people and traditions without needing an artificially certain meaning.
