Tommy

Tommy is a familiar form of Thomas, a name from an Aramaic word meaning twin. It is also used directly as a full given name. The older meaning does not require a child called Tommy to be a twin; it belongs to the history of Thomas and the names that developed from it.

Tommie is a close spelling alternative. Tommy may also be used familiarly for longer feminine forms in the Thomas family, depending on the bearer. The double m and final y give it a clear two-syllable English shape. A family honoring someone known as Tommy can preserve that everyday form without automatically choosing Thomas for official records.
