Tristian

Tristian is usually understood as a spelling of Tristan, the name associated with the medieval romance of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan’s history has been connected with an older Celtic name and was later influenced by words suggesting sadness. Those layers explain the familiar “sorrow” interpretation without making it an unquestioned original meaning.

The extra i can change how English readers pronounce the name, so some families use a sound closer to Christian. That resemblance has also encouraged the idea of a Tristan–Christian combination, but it does not prove that every Tristian was created that way. The medieval literary connection is more secure than elaborate compound translations joining noise, sorrow, and followers of Christ.
