Turner

Turner is an English occupational surname for someone who shaped wood or other material on a lathe. The name therefore points to a craft and a skilled worker, rather than to a physical direction or an abstract personality trait. Like Taylor and Carter, it later moved from surname use into the pool of given names.

Painter J. M. W. Turner provides a prominent artistic connection, while musician Tina Turner is another familiar surname bearer. Those associations are separate from the name’s literal meaning. As a first name, Turner has two syllables and a clear ending without an obvious necessary nickname. Parents may find it especially meaningful when it preserves a family surname or reflects an interest in craftsmanship, design, or art.
