Uri

Uri is a Hebrew name meaning “my light.” The ending expresses possession, making it a compact but complete name rather than merely an abbreviation. In the Hebrew Bible, Uri is the father of Bezalel, the skilled craftsman associated with constructing the sacred furnishings for the Israelites’ worship.

The light meaning connects naturally with Jewish naming traditions, and Uri remains familiar as a personal name in Hebrew-speaking families. Writer and illustrator Uri Shulevitz provides a notable literary namesake. Ori is a related form, while longer names such as Uriel contain additional elements and have their own complete meanings. For parents interested in a short biblical name, Uri combines a specific scriptural bearer with a direct image of light and a continuing personal-name tradition.
